My preferred method of working is from a combination of live sittings and my own
photography, although I can work entirely from photographs where the hectic schedules
or extreme youth of my subjects make this necessary.
I like to paint people in their own environments, their homes or offices. Usually
I will spend two hours or so over a first meeting discussing the clients wishes,
making suggestions of my own and photographing the subject in a variety of settings,
lighting and costumes.
From these photographs I make some initial drawings, for client approval of composition
and pose before transferring a loose block-in to canvas to begin the paintings.
Where possible I will then paint the head from life, working in 2 hour sittings
and using my photographs for clothing detail etc. between these (after all, few
people have either the time or inclination to sit still while I struggle with
the intricacies of lace or cufflinks!)
A painting may be completed in a clients home or back in my studio and then delivered
by courier. Of course no painting is complete until both artist and client are
completely happy.
