March 2010 - ongoing
Sometimes a story touches your heart and you can see a way to help a little.
We all saw the first pictures from the Haiti earthquake. A team in Langford BC saw them and immediately determined to do something real and concrete. They would rebuild an orphange, wrecked by the quake. But how to raise the money? They needed $150,000 - and fast. The children's, home, school and security was gone and the situation was urgent.
When my partner saw their story on the TV news, she knew we should help - she put me in touch with the team leadership and I offered to make a painting of the orphans, a picture we could make Giclee's and prints from, to create both an original and a signed limited edition they could use as a fund raiser.
I painted as quickly as I could, Digital Direct Services stepped up with a generous break on making the prints, Art World generously donated a frame for the original, Lance Morris at Morris Gallery agreed to feature the painting in a show. The whole team got behind the image, making it the centrepiece of the campaign, and hit on the idea of giving prints to all who would donate above $500, giclees to donors above $5000.
The fundraising campaign launched at a gala dinner and I was truly honoured and humbled to see my picture up front and centre, to share in the tears and joy, as guests watched a short film about the project that touched all our hearts , and then to watch the response. Everybody went home with a print, all the giclees were gone, and, in a little over two hours, the team had $175,000 for the project. People are so generous. The team are working so hard.
I was thrilled to be a small part of it - my humble print is now in Haiti, Africa, Italy, the USA and dotted across Canada. The new buildings are rising from the ruins, the children are fed, housed and back in school, but most of all, they know someone cares.
